Personal Care Services allows families to continue to keep their child, adolescent or adult with developmental or physical disabilities living at home in their own community. Families Plus provides personal care services in Bernalillo, Sandoval and Valencia Counties.

The people who receive personal care services work with our personal care attendants to either maintain or improve their self-help or general life skills. Family members receive a break from the some-times overwhelming responsibility of daily caring for a son, daughter, sister or brother with disabilities.

Services range from assisting a person who uses a wheelchair with toileting or transfers to teaching service recipients basic cooking skills or learn about our community. Services are tailored to meet the special needs and requirements of each person receiving services and may include assistance with bathing, dressing, meal preparation, recreational activities, and transportation.

Personal Care Attendants are responsible, creative, dependable, fun-loving and caring people who are interested in making a difference in the life of someone with disabilities. Families Plus provides PCAs with special training classes about caring for people with disabilities, including CPR/first aid training. Each PCA receives about 40 hours of classroom instruction before he/she is sent out into the field to begin work. Additional training classes are required every few months during the first year of service and then each year.

Families Plus employees, called Service Coordinators, assure that service recipients are receiving quality services and that PCAs are providing the appropriate support to each individual. Service Coordinators meet with PCAs and the service recipient at least once each month, attend planning meetings and assist individuals to meet his/her particular service goals and dreams.

If you are a person with disabilities interested in receiving personal care services, you will need to contact your Medicaid DD Waiver case manager for more information about whether you qualify for this service.
